Student Collaboration with Corkboard.Me

1/23/2013

Picture
Corkboard Me is a simple service for creating and sharing a wall of sticky notes.  To use Corkboard Me just visit the site then click anywhere on the virtual corkboard to start typing your notes. A URL will be assigned to your corkboard. Share that URL with anyone that you want to add notes to your wall. Corkboard Me is a free service.

This service would be a fantastic collaboration tool and discussion board to use with students.  Students could:
  • Share their ideas on a topic
  • Give information about something they learned
  • Use as an “Exit Ticket”
  • Brainstorm a topic as a group or class

Picture
Simply provide students with the unique URL for your corkboard, the topic, and begin the discussion!  Keep in mind that you should set the expectations with students prior to use of what is and is not appropriate for posting on the discussion board.  You may also want students to put names on their sticky notes for student accountability and assessment of student learning.

Pin It with Pinterest

1/23/2013

Did you know that pinterest.com is a great way to build your PLN (Professional Learning Network)?  In fact, it even has its own category dedicated to Education.  Just like many teachers follow educational blogs and feeds, a teacher can follow other people’s educational pins and boards on Pinterest. After finding an idea or concept that they like, a teacher can “repin” items to their board for future use.

The difference between Pinterest and other Social Networking sites is that Pinterest allows you to follow a “board” instead of a specific person.  This makes it so an individual can stay organized and focused on their specific needs.  When people post on blogs, they seem to be very broad and post anything. Yet, when people pin to boards, each board is organized by a certain category.

There are two basic ways to find items on Pinterest.  The first is by using the search engine.  When typing a topic in the search engine, results will be likely to fit the theme that matches the goal.  Examples of this are searching for iPad Apps for Reading, Civil War Lesson Plans, or Art Projects.

On the other hand, sometimes it can be exciting to see new ideas surrounding a common theme. In this case, it is a good idea to choose a category to look through. For educators, there is an Education category.  The Education category seems to be centered on the elementary grades, but many of the ideas can be adapted to upper grades as well. There are many other categories to look through that can provide ideas for new class projects. Health and Fitness, Technology, Art, History, and Design are just a few of the categories educators might find interesting.

Part of Building a PLN is taking the opportunity to share successes with others.  Pinterest is a fantastic way to do that. It is easy to upload a pin (files) for others to see. It is always exciting to watch other people repin your pins on their boards and celebrate your successes.

How will you Pinterest?

The Great Grant Rescue

1/7/2013

Many people began the school year hopeful that their special ideas for the classroom were going to be funded by grants through Donors Choose and Chevron.  There are a large number of classrooms that benefited tremendously from this grant.  The Canyons Education Foundation also has generously supported many teacher-driven innovations as well.

Due to funding limitations, there are also some grants that have not received the support teachers were hoping to have.  We want to let teachers and schools know that hope is not lost .  There are still ways to apply for funding.  Check out this video podcast that discusses some things you can do!  Find out more on our Grants page.

Thanks to Katie Dewey, Danae Reff, and Jared Ward for the creation of this video podcast!

The Presentation Key on the iPad

1/1/2013

Picture
Apple makes the best presentation software for the computer called Keynote. It is like PowerPoint but better. Keynote is PowerPoint on drugs. It has better animations then PPT. Better transition also. Now Apple has taken their premier software and made it for the iPad.

Keynote is available for the iPad for only $9.99 and is cheaper is the school buys more than 20 copies. Keynote on the iPad is so easy to use because everything is just a tap away from creation. Just add slides from the plus sign in the navigation column. There a several different types of slides to choose from. Then start adding your content. Pictures are easy to add to slides just by tapping on the placeholder or by tapping on the insert button. You can also add charts, tables and shapes. Transitions and animations are as simple as selecting the object you want to animate or the slide. Apple even created a Keynote presentation showing you how to do everything in the iPad version of Keynote.  It is the first Keynote that is there when you open the app. There is so much more that you can do with Keynote that you will want to make an appointment with your Ed Tech to teach you more about it.
