Recording with Swivl

Want to record yourself teaching but don't want to stay in one place?  Swivl is a great option for hearing your voice and for following you around the room.  The Swivl device can sit on a table, desk or other flat surface or be attached to a tripod.  An iOS device (iPhone or iPod Touch) is inserted and connected to the base to record.

The teacher wears a marker either around their neck or clipped on a pocket.  The marker allows you to walk around the room and the Swivl, well, swivels to follow you.  No one needs to move the camera to follow you.  You can also start and stop recording with the record button on the marker.

The marker also has a microphone that connects to the iOS device allowing your voice to be heard when you are across the room from the Swivl or even have your back to it while writing on the board.  Background noise is virtually eliminated.  If you want to record a student's comment, you need to be standing next to the student or repeat their comment.

Swivl even shares ideas for using their product on their website:

Flipped classroom.
Allows teachers to quickly capture themselves delivering a lesson and distribute it to students. The Swivl removes the barrier of having to convert existing lessons into multimedia to start trying this teaching technique.

 Professional development.
Enables capture and sharing video of their skills with online professional development communities like Torsh, Teaching Channel, Bloomboard and more. The Swivl enables frequent sharing and more rapid skills development.

 Teacher assessments.
Removes the awkwardness of using video in teacher/principal reviews and lets the principal focus on the review. It also brings transparency and efficiency to the process for administrators.

Once video has been recorded on an iOS device, it can be copied to a computer by plugging it in and accessing the app via iTunes.  The Education Technology Specialists and Achievement Coaches are having fun experimenting with recording teachers and learning more about the Swivl.
