GarageBand: Mac OS vs. iOS

The GarageBand application on the Mac Operating System has a different look and feel from the GarageBand app on an iOS device. Both have unique feature that are fun and educational. Here are some highlights of the features in each option:

Mac Application
  • Project editing windows all on one screen
  • Learn to play - guitar, piano, and artist lessons
  • Lesson store - purchase additional guitar, piano, and artist lessons
  • Magic GarageBand - quick templates for various genres
  • iPhone Ringtone - build or record your own custom ringtones
  • Songwriting - generate sheet music for your compositions
  • Podcast - create audio only or enhanced podcasts (with photos or movie clips)
  • Movie - create soundtracks for your movie productions
  • Access to instrument loops, jingles, sound effects, audio effects, and your iTunes, iPhoto, and iMovie libraries
iOS App
  • Multiple project views including play back, editing, and instrument views
  • Sampler - record sounds and play them back on your keyboard
  • Smart instruments - mix your own drum beats and play instruments based on keys, strings, and chords
  • Access to instrument loops, audio effects, and your iTunes library
  • Jam Session - jam with other GarageBand users online
  • Cannot currently add photos or video to projects, but can export projects to iTunes to open on your Mac

Uses:

1.  Songwriting
2.  Soundtrack creation
3.  Podcasting and digital storytelling

Limitations:

1.  GarageBand only runs on Apple operating systems.
2.  GarageBand projects are difficult to change to .mov file format.
