Sock Puppets?

11/6/2012

At Crescent Elementary, Mrs. Burton bought her own iPad earlier this year. She has used it here and there for the past few months. However, she took the Using iOS in Teaching and Learning Professional Development class offered by the EdTech Dept. and loved it. She learned a lot of new things. She had a  lot of fun.

One of the things she learned about was the Sock Puppets app. If you are not familiar with Sock Puppets, it is an app that presents you with some different settings to choose from and also some, well sock puppet of course. Users can move the puppets around as the talk and record what they are doing. Then the app does some voice changing to make everyone sound weird. You can save these puppet shows and play them back.

Mrs. Burton was so excited by this app that she came back to her class and wanted them to use it. With one iPad it could have been rather difficult, but she chose a day when she had buddies coming from the high school to work with her 3rd graders. So she showed the app to the high schoolers and sent her students in 2 at a time to make a puppet show. They had a great time making them, but the favorite thing was sharing them with the class. They had an impromptu puppet show film festival.

It was a great use of one iPad and one app used for a whole class.
