At Willow Springs Elementary Mrs. Ribeiro's sixth-graders found a great way to tie the arts into Social Studies! Recently they created a music video highlighting what they learned about Ancient Egypt. Students started by finding books in their school library and researching Ancient Egypt. They grouped the concepts they learned about into five general categories: Nile River life, landmarks, pharaohs, mummification, and gods. They then re-wrote the lyrics to the song "Walk Like an Egyptian" by The Bangles so that their song parody taught the topics they had researched.
Then the technical work began. They recorded their song parody in GarageBand and exported it to their iTunes library so it would be ready to add to their film footage. Next, they created a storyboard that outlined every shot that would be part of their music video. The storyboard helped them plan sets, costumes, the script, and casting.

Simple costumes and props were created, and then filming began. They filmed almost all their scenes in front of a green screen, and their Ed Tech Specialist helped them find royalty-free photos on Flickr Storm to use as background. All the filming was completed in just a few hours!
Everything finally came together in iMovie. The students edited their footage, inserted photos and music, and added titles and captions. In the end, they had a product they were excited to debut at their school's film festival that was evidence of all they had learned in their Social Studies class. Check out their video here:
