Podcast Power!

7/23/2012

Students from Sprucewood Elementary had the unique privilege of presenting at the recent ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) Conference. The conference was held in San Diego, CA, so the students presented via Skype. They were able to video chat and instant message with more than 200 teachers from around the globe and share with them their experiences with podcasting over the last school year.

Sprucewood 5th and 6th graders Ashley Wangsgard, Sara Lloyd, Spencer Roberson, and Marshall Scroggin spent the 2011-2012 school year as producers, directors, writers, editors, reporters, and technicians creating three weekly podcasts: The Falcon Report, The Principal's Podcast, and The Falcon Facts.  Each of Sprucewood’s podcasts has been created with specific goals and audiences in mind:
  • “The Falcon Report” is a student-created newscast that informs students and faculty about current school events, student achievement, and reminders about student behavior and educational expectations. Students use iMovie, a digital video camera, and Telemprompt+ to create this podcast.
  • “The Principal Podcast” allows Principal Garth Anderson an opportunity to speak directly to the school community about upcoming events, student achievement, and helpful educational hints for parents. Students use iMovie, Teleprompt+, and iPhoto to create this podcast.
  • “The Falcon Facts” is a podcast specifically tied to the Core Curriculum. Students create podcasts in a variety of styles that present concepts they have learned in the classroom. These podcasts can focus on any curriculum topic -- math, literacy, science, social studies, art, anything! Students use iPhoto and GarageBand to create this podcast.
Through the podcast creation process, Sprucewood students have developed skills in using digital tools, working with multimedia, information evaluation, planning and designing, critical thinking, creativity, communication, personal and group expression, collaboration, and digital citizenship. They have helped create a sense of community within Sprucewood Elementary by providing a way for everyone to know what students from all grade levels throughout the school are achieving and by instructing other students as they work together on this exciting project.
