Learning to Use iMovie in 5th Grade!

12/24/2012

For the past couple of weeks, Cena Davenport’s 5th grade class has been exploring the incredible editing features available to them in iMovie.  They have used their precious time in the Creativity Lab to gain an understanding of how to add clips, titles, and transitions to create their own professional movies!

After the holiday, the students will be working to make films that tie directly into the curriculum.  It amazed me how quickly the students took to using the tools.  While the idea of teaching such a powerful program to a group of elementary students may seem daunting logistically, the features are actually quite intuitive for students.  Ms. Davenport was very anxious to fully utilize the multimedia tools available in the Creativity Lab.  Her students are benefiting tremendously from her desire to give them a 21st century learning experience with technology!

As the students are creating stories and making decisions about sequence they are engaged in their creations in a very unique way.  After just two 30 minute sessions in the Creativity Lab, the students were able to create a movie with professional grade titles and transitions!  They were focused, excited, and sad to have to leave at the end of their lab time.  We look forward to seeing what they produce in the new year.  Expect a follow-up post in the coming weeks!

If you'd like to try iMovie with your class, talk to your Ed Tech.  You can also check out a video tutorial from Apple which will help you get started here.
