Mrs. Washburn’s 9th grade Geography classes at Mount Jordan Middle School have been studying Africa. This year the regular worksheets were tossed out in favor of technology. Mrs. Washburn consulted with Bobie Glassett, the Educational Technology Specialist for Mount Jordan Middle School and together they decided to have students collaborate in groups of three or four students to conduct research and produce a group presentation using Google Drive (formerly Goggle Docs).
Students were taught how to sign up for a Goggle account, create a presentation and then share it with their teammates and teacher. Once the presentation was shared, all members of the team created new slides, edited existing slides and could see what others were doing in real time. Mrs. Washburn gave students a rubric to follow and guide their exploration. Students were shown how to access Pioneer Utah’s Online Library
Once students logged into Pioneer they had access to World Book Student. Here students were able to locate information, maps and even videos to use in their presentations.
Once the presentations were finished students began giving their presentations in class. Each group was assigned a different country in Africa. Student in the audience were asked to note important information on a graphic organizer.
All of these resources are available to Canyons School District students. If you would like more information about using any of the tools mentioned in this post please contact your Educational Technology Specialist today. Click here for a link to the contact us page.
