Instant messaging is form of text based communication between to electronic devices.  With the appropriate account or app, you can IM from a computer, iPad, iPod, smartphone or tablet.  Some common IM platforms are:

• Skype

Instant messaging is similar to text messaging, and in some cases, are one and the same.
