Using Dropbox as an Educator

Picture
Dropbox is just one of many online file storage services. The benefit of storing your files online is that you never need to carry a thumb drive, you don't have to email anything to yourself, and you can go back to an older version of any file you save. Also, many mobile devices have apps that allow you to sync your dropbox account so that you always have your files with you.

Overview of Online File Storage

Sometimes called "the cloud," storing files online is becoming more and more popular. If done right, it is safe, secure, and convenient. There are many sites that allow you a small amount of free online storage. There are also several sites that charge a monthly or yearly fee for storage space.

Free Online File Storage

Dropbox (2GB free, can earn up to 8GB)
Google Drive (Individual file limits, web apps)
SkyDrive (7GB free, works with MS Web Apps)
Amazon Cloud Drive (5GB free)
SugarSync (5GB free)
Box.net (5GB free)

Pay for Online File Storage

Dropbox (50GB, $9.99/mo. 100GB, $19.99/mo)
MozyPro (50GB, $5.99/mo. 125GB, $9.99/mo)
MobileMe (20GB, $99.99/year)
Carbonite (Unlimited, $59.00/year)
Amazon Cloud Drive (up to 1000GB, $1 per GB/year)
SugarSync (multiple plans, up to 500GB, $39.99/mo)
*This list is just a sample of the sites that will store your files online. We like Dropbox because it is easy to use, has great extra features (sharing, history, and many others), and connects to dozens of apps for your mobile device.
