iOS Standards

The number of iOS applications available to iPad, iPhone and iPod users has been growing exponentially since the Apple "App Store" was first introduced in 2008.  At the time that this website was published in the Fall of 2013, the Apple App store had a total of over one million apps.  Of those one million apps, over 40,000 are categorized as "educational".  These massive numbers make it nearly impossible to filter through every app to determine its educational value and list on this website.

Therefore, rather than list ALL of the apps that are appropriate for use on iPads, iPods, or iPhones in Canyons District Classrooms, we have provided two alternatives.
Picture
First, use the "CRITICAL EVALUATION OF A CONTENT-BASED MOBILE APP" template embedded below from Kathy Schrock's website.  If an App is connected to curriculum, provides practice for authentic skills and feedback to students with opportunities for differentiation, but doesn't allow for inappropriate ads or requests additional purchases, then it is up to the teacher to use professional judgement to use the app with students.  Although teachers can download and install apps on the devices they're using for instruction, Apps for student iPads must be approved and vetted by the school's EdTech.  School iOS labs (iPad, iPad Mini, and iPod Touch devices) will be supervised by EdTechs with the support of FieldTechs.
Second,  when looking for a new app to support instruction use one of the quick link App Store widgets below.  A list of websites are also available at the bottom of this page as a resource from which to start app shopping.  The Canyons District EdTech team also promote "Apps of the Week" on our Twitter feed @CSDEdTech, and provide a page of apps for teachers getting started using iOS devices.  For a condensed list of apps for use in the class room visit the CSD EdTech Classroom Apps page.
