Student Access to Active Directory/Open Directory (AD/OD) for Windows
Student Login
With the AD/OD system, each student will login in to all lab computers using their own unique username and password. Students must login with their AD credentials every time they use a networked computer. They must also log out every time they are finished using that machine to ensure that others do not have access to their account and their projects. This login allows students to access their own projects from any networked computer in their school.
Teachers will need to teach their students learn their username and password. It can be helpful to have students practice logging in and out several times in the computer lab until they have their username and password memorized. This username and password will stay with each student throughout their career in Canyons School District.

When students log in using their AD credentials on a Windows computer, they will see a number of subject folders on the desktop. They will also see a “Teacher Hand-In Out Folder”.
_Students can only open the following folders:
- Their “My Documents” folder.
- The school-wide “Activities” folder
- Their grade level folder
- Their grade level “Activities” folder
- Their teacher’s folder
- Their teacher’s “Activities” folder
- Their teacher’s “Hand Out” folder
_By limiting student access to these folders, it will reduce the risk of students accidentally moving, hiding, trashing, or altering others’ materials.Folders that students do not have permission to access are marked with a red - sign.
_My Documents
Students will save and store all of their projects to the “My Documents” folder, just as they previously saved to the School Folder. When they save a project for the first time, the following window appears:

Activities
Activities
_“Activities” folders are a great place for teachers to put web links and other activities that will frequently be used by their students. Teachers can place activities for only their class in their own “Activities” folder, activities for only their grade level in the grade level “Activities” folder, or activities to be shared with the whole school in the general “Activities” folder. For instructions about saving web links to your “Activities” folder, please visit http://prolearning.canyonsdistrict.org/managing-the-computer-lab.html.
Hand Out
Hand Out
_The “Hand Out” folder is a great place for teachers to put directions, rubrics, worksheets, templates, lists of URLs, etc. Students can retrieve assignments given them by their teacher by opening them in the “Hand Out” folder. Items in the “Hand Out” folder cannot be edited or deleted by students. Students must “Save As” any document they wish to use as a template for their own work.
Hand In
Hand In
_To submit completed projects to their teacher, students will click and drag (rather than “Save As”) their projects from their “My Documents” folder to the “Hand In” folder. When students drag an item to the “Hand In” folder, they will see the following message:
_To submit their project to their teacher, they will click “OK”.Students cannot submit the same assignment again, nor can they submit an assignment with the same title as another student’s. If they try to do so, they will see the following message:
_The only way for the to submit another version of that project is to rename it. Following is an example of a good way for students to title their projects:
name_project name_project# (for a revised version of the same assignment)
ex. katieb_haiku ex. katieb_haiku2
This folder cannot be opened by students. This protects student work from being viewed or deleted by other students. If a student tries to open the “Hand In” folder, they will see the following message:
